2027: Abejide warns supporters against reelection distraction

House of Representatives member representing Yagba Federal constituency, Kogi State, Leke Abejide, has told his supporters and speculators not to distract him with calls for him to recontest in the 2027 House of Representatives election.

He also warned those permutating that his possible return to the National Assembly in 2027 would the pave way for him to emerge as the next House Speaker to bury the thought, as that was not the purpose of his aspiration, in the first place.

Abejide noted that his focus is on consolidating on providing good governance for his people while also concentrating on his duties on the floor of the National Assembly as a lawmaker.

Abejide, who is serving a second term, spoke on Thursday, through his Chief of Staff, Shola Adebola, against the backdrop of unabated calls from constituents, urging him to prepare to throw his hat in the ring for a third term.

He stated that having come out from the National Assembly election early last year, followed by his participation in Kogi State governorship contest in November 2023, he should reasonably be allowed to settle down to his primary assignment, focusing on how to contribute his quota towards bringing economic renewal to his people in line with President Bola Tinubu’s economic reform programmes.

Noting that he did not know where the idea of 2027 came from, he dissociated himself from such calls and warned those behind it to desist henceforth.

“In the past couple of days, I have been inundated with calls that I should run again in 2027; I am totally focused and committed to delivering on the mandate given to me by the people of Yagba Constituency for a second term and bringing economic succour to my constituents.

“This June, I just spent a year out of the four years mandate given to me. For now, I have a lot to do, hence the decision to focus my time and energy on the delivery that mandate entrusted to me, no more, no less”.

Abejide called for support, reiterating that the issue of the 2027 elections should not be put on the front burner so as not to heat the polity, as such thoughts are not on his mind.

“I beg those behind the calls to leave me alone. Even if they are my friends, I will blacklist them. I also urge politicians not to allow their rhetorics about 2027 affect our land, they should rather pray to God for life and good health as only the living and the healthy will play politics. The choice of who becomes a Speaker is the collective decisions of the National Assembly leadership and party hierarchy. I would not like to be drawn to any debates that will pitch me against my fellow members.

“God is the owner of life, and when the time is right, He will guide and guard our paths to wherever He desires for us. I say it again, all interests concerning me and the politics of 2027 should be buried for now.”
