Lagos State Government has said that 9,000 pupils have still not resumed schools after the lockdown.
Chairman of the state’s Universal Basic Education (SUBEB), Mr. Wahab Alawiye-King, disclosed this at a programme tagged: “A Day Out with Lagos SUBEB Chairman,” organised by Human Development Initiatives (HDI) with the support of Macarthur Foundation and Norad.
According to Alawiye-King, after schools were reopened following the easing of the lockdown, about 21 pupils did not return to schools but with collaborative efforts with critical stakeholders, including the private sector, 12,000 of the pupils had returned to schools.
The SUBEB chairman said out-of-school children was a major concern to his board, reason it was collaborating with different agencies, ministries as well as the private sector to check the rate of out-of-school children.
Meanwhile, Executive Director, Human Development Initiatives (HDI), Olufunso Owasonoye, who noted that Nigeria currently has the highest number of out-of-school children, said the programme was aimed at providing a platform for stakeholders to engage directly with the Lagos State University Basic Education Board to provide answers to questions.
