A group of artistes and other professionals, known as ‘United Abia Artistes and Patriots (UAAP)’ has written Governor Okezie Ikpeazu over alleged non-payment of civil servants’ March salaries and pensions after receiving allocations from Federal Government.

In the letter, the group accused Ikpeazu of being nonchalant to the welfare of civil servants and retirees, alleging that Abia’s civil servants were made to celebrate Easter “on an empty stomach.”

They stressed that an outgoing government should have empathy and a human face.

The letter reads in part: “We have observed, with dismay, the continued delay in payment of civil servants and pensioners by your government after receiving March federal allocation in addition to revenue earned from the state’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) for the period under review.

“We are, therefore, calling on the Ikpeazu administration to be alive to its responsibilities and do the needful to the starving workers, as well as pensioners by bequeathing their due entitlements.

“This wake-up call has become imperative so that the incumbent government will not leave behind huge unpaid salaries for the incoming administration to handle, in addition to myriads of problems it would leave behind for it.

“The big question being asked by concerned citizens of the state is why the present administration has refused to utilise a good portion of the federal allocation in offsetting wages of workers and retirees, which is constitutionally its primary responsibility.
