Airtel verifies 4.5m subscribers as SIM-NIN linkage nears closure

Firm gets recognition
Airtel Nigeria has disclosed that some 9.2 million of its customers have submitted their National Identification Number (NIN) for verification ahead of the February 28 deadline issued by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) for all unlinked lines to be fully barred.

Airtel Africa, the parent company, disclosed this in its nine-month financial statement released recently.

While noting that Airtel Nigeria does not have a significant number of customers without NIN that could affect its revenue, the company said those who had submitted are now being verified.

While checks by The Guardian showed that Airtel as of November 2023 had 61.3 million and controlled 27.5 per cent of the Nigerian market, the firm added that 4.5 million customers have already been verified since the directive was issued in December 2023.

With concerns that some of its customers might be affected by the directive comes February 28, Airtel said it is working with the telecoms regulator to minimise the risk of service disruption.

Recall that last December, the NCC issued a directive asking mobile network operators in the country to implement full network barring on all phone lines for which the subscribers have not submitted their national identification numbers (NINs) by February 28, 2024.

In addition, those who had submitted their NINs but have not been verified are also to be fully barred.

Meanwhile, the company has been named the ’Telecoms Company of the Year’ by the New Telegraph newspapers. The award was presented at the yearly New Telegraph Award ceremony, which was held at the weekend in Lagos.

According to the organizers of the event, awardees were selected individuals and organizations that had been making remarkable social and economic impacts in Nigeria, while operating as ambassadors of selflessness, patriotism, and excellence.

In response to the recognition, Director of Corporate Communications and CSR, Airtel Nigeria, Femi Adeniran, said the company appreciated that its commitment to delivering cutting-edge services, fostering innovation, and consistently exceeding customer expectations was being acknowledged by a respected media organisation.
