ASUU backs SSANU, NASU on strike

ASUU President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has thrown its weight behind the striking Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), saying their action was in order.

ASUU National President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, however, faulted the two unions for making referenceto another union to justify their decision to embark on strike.

Osodeke noted that every union has its own way of negotiating with its employer on matters affecting members.

“And that is what we call unionism and not about what your employer has done for another union. There is no point for SSANU and NASU to be referring to ASUU, before getting their entitlements.”

Osodeke, nonetheless, appealed to the government to settle backlog of withheld salaries of all university workers across unions, and resolve all outstanding issues.

“It should not wait for another round of industrial crisis before acting.

The ASUU chief expressed hope that the government would do what is right to safe the university education sub-sector from collapse.
