Boundary dispute in Ekiti-Kwara communities claims one life, govt urges calm

Monisade Afuye

The lingering boundary dispute between Eda Oniyo community in Ilejemeje Local Council of Ekiti State and Obo Ayegunle town in Kwara State has claimed one life.

The Guardian learnt there had been tension between the two communities, leading to an invasion by armed men from Obo Ayegunle on Saturday. One person from Eda Oniyo community was reportedly killed before soldiers, policemen and other security personnel were deployed to restore normalcy.

Recall that last Thursday, Ekiti State Deputy Governor, Monisade Afuye, met with the leadership of the Eda Oniyo community over the boundary dispute with a view to solving the crisis.

The community led by their monarch, Oba Julius Awolola, had complained about how some people from Obo Ayegunle allegedly invaded the town, apprehended people indiscriminately and clamped them in detention in a tussle over a vast plot of land between the two towns.

Meanwhile, the Ekiti State government has appealed to residents of Eda Oniyo to remain calm.
Commissioner for Information, Taiwo Olatunbosun, in a statement, yesterday, assured that the situation had been brought under control.

He also assured that additional troops had already moved to the area to protect the community while the military formation in Kwara State had been contacted to deploy troops along the Kwara side of the border to curtail attack from both sides.

Reiterating the commitment of the Ekiti State government to fostering peace and security across the state, Olatunbosun stressed the need for calm while security agencies take charge of the situation. He promised that perpetrators and their accomplices would be fished out and brought to justice. He also expressed condolences to the family of the deceased.
