The Bayero University Kano (BUK) has unveiled a modern skills acquisition centre to build the capacity of students for entrepreneurship and self-reliance.
Launching the initiative at the Students Affairs Deanery, the Vice Chancellor, Prof Abbas Sagir, said the centre would train students in tailoring and make-up to become self-reliant.
The vice chancellor said the idea was to help the students acquire the modern skills that would sustain them before getting jobs after graduation.
He stressed that the centre would be a veritable source of revenue and job creation since the government could no longer provide adequate employment to the teeming youth.
“Today is another significant milestone for me as the university is witnessing another giant stride towards improving the welfare of students through a skills acquisition platform. This comes barely two months after the university launched a job scheme that employed 125 students to serve as part-time workers,” the vice chancellor stressed.
He said, already, the students had started enjoying their wages, adding that based on assessment, they are working efficiently.
He enjoined the beneficiaries to utilise the facilities provided judiciously and use their time efficiently to learn so that after graduation, they would remember the university for providing education and entrepreneurship skills.
According to the vice chancellor, the management would continue to explore many other avenues and opportunities to strengthen the welfare of students.
He commended the Dean, Prof. Shamsuddeen Umar, for establishing the centre and for exemplifying his leadership qualities that are centred on the improvement of welfare to students.
In his remark, the Dean, Prof. Umar, expressed gratitude to the vice chancellor for initiating such laudable projects, noting that the VC’s penchant for improved welfare of students would forever be appreciated.
