Justice Igho Patricia Braimoh of an Edo High Court in Benin has fixed April 30 for hearing on an enforcement of fundamental human rights action instituted by Chukwudi Akpotowho Mudiaga over his arrest on alleged aiding of suicide.
Mudiaga is named as a defendant in the case of aiding the suicide of Lilian Omokhuale, the daughter of Francis Omoruyi Oloton, a business mogul and chief executive officer of Uyi Technical Company Limited.
Mudiaga, in suit (B/529M/2023) filed on November 23, 2023, through his counsel, Eghosa Aganmwonyi, requested accelerated hearing and the protection of his rights.
His counsel further requested the court’s protection of his client, whom he said is being harassed and subjected to unwarranted arrests by the respondents, coupled with cyber bullying and trial.
The Inspector General of Police; Assistant Inspector General of Police Zone 5; Commissioner of Police, Edo State; Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC); Department of State Services; and Francis Omoruyi Oloton are named as respondents in the fundamental human rights suit.
Meanwhile, in their investigation, Justice Briamoh called for restraint on the side of the first to fifth respondent, so as not to jeopardise the case before the court.
Recall that 40-year old Lilian Omokhuale, on October 7, 2022, allegedly committed suicide at the Government Reserved Area of Benin City, Edo State, prompting the police to commence investigation.
Investigation revealed that the six accused persons allegedly aided her suicide and were consequently held by the police.
