Amu steps down from race, cites party supremacy
A governorship aspirant on the platform of the Labour Party (LP) in Edo State, Egbe Omorodion, yesterday, called for a reduction in the cost of obtaining the party’s Expression of Interest and Nomination Form, saying only money bag politicians can afford it going by the huge amount involved.
He, however, appealed to the party leadership to review the fees to allow commoners vying for the governorship seat to compete favourably.
LP had announced N30 million as the cost of obtaining the party’s Expression of Interest and Nomination Form for aspirants contesting for the Edo governorship election.
Omorodion said that the strategy by the leadership of the party is an attempt to rip off aspirants, noting that such cost would discourage credible and qualified aspirants jostling to pick the party’s governorship ticket.
He insisted that the strategy is not right, adding that the governorship aspirants on the platform of LP feel discriminated against because of the huge amount for nomination forms.
He said: “I am appealing to LP leadership to review the cost of purchasing the form. It has the right to fix the price of picking the forms, and I also know the party needs money, but I don’t think this is the best way to raise money.”
MEANWHILE, ahead of this year’s Edo State governorship election, an All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, Victoria Amu, has stepped down from the race.
Commending the Senator representing Edo North Senatorial District, Adams Oshiomhole, for his astute management of party’s matters, in a statement, yesterday, Amu reaffirmed that she would no longer purchase the nomination forms.
According to her, she would abide by the party’s decisions.
She observed that APC’s resolutions were larger than any individual’s ambition, adding: “While I am passionate about the prospect of serving the good people of Edo as their governor, I want to make it unequivocally clear that my ambition is not greater than the supremacy of our party.”
The APC’s collective goals and the well-being of the people of Edo State are of utmost importance to me. I am fully aligned with the party’s vision and principles.”
