Increase in the number of retired and deceased staff without replacement may cripple council administration in Jigawa State, says the Executive Chairman, Local Government Service Commission, Uba Ringim.
Addressing a press conference at the commission’s conference room yesterday, Ringim, a retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police, said the lacuna was due to the state’s embargo on employment.
However, the state was able to promote 1,301 staff in the 27 councils. Ringim explained that about 907 employees retired across the 27 councils, while 47 retired from the Local Education Authority of the Commission.
About 110 reportedly died. All these have not been replaced.
According to him, there is no cause for alarm, as the commission was taking appropriate measures to contain the situation, stressing the issues will be addressed once government lifts the embargo on employment.
On the achievements of the board in 2020, he stated that it converted 50 staff, advanced 38, and changed the cadre of 46, among other promotions.
Others include computerising the operation of the councils to meet the trends.
“We introduced unified staff identity cards for our senior staff across the 27 councils, in addition to the introduction of attendance register to arrest issues of truancy to instil discipline for increased productivity at the grassroots.
“During the year under review, we conducted 36 different seminars and workshops which benefitted 605 staff drawn from the 27 councils, while we settled training expenses of 664 staff studying in different tertiary institution’s across the country,” he added.
