Fear as gunmen attack UNTH, abduct deputy director, security

Gunmen

There was panic at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Ituku-Ozalla, Enugu State on Tuesday as gunmen, suspected to be kidnappers, attacked the facility and whisked away a female director, nursing services, and a security man.

The Guardian gathered that the female director and the security man she picked on her way to work had driven into the hospital premises when the gunmen, whose number could not be ascertained, swooped on them.

They were said to have opened fire on the black coloured Land Cruiser she was driving, prompting her to stop, they immediately made it to her vehicle and evacuated her and the security man into their car and zoomed off.

A video of her abandoned car with bullet-perforated glass on the front of the passenger side has gone viral on social media with the voice of female staff being heard “One of our staff has just been kidnapped now. This is so sad; we are not safe at all in this hospital; everywhere is porous”.

It was gathered that the incident occurred at the same location where a medical doctor was kidnapped a few weeks ago.

Efforts to get the police to speak on the matter as of press time proved abortive. But the Public Relations Officer of the UNTH, Mr Boniface Uchelue confirmed the incident.

He stated that relevant security agencies had been briefed on the matter, saying he was confident they would be rescued unhurt.

The incident is the second in the state in the last three days.

Armed persons on Sunday killed a yet to be identified man, who was travelling with his family within Eke-Egede-Affa road in Udi local government council of the state.

The killers had abducted his wife and daughter, leaving the man dead in a pool of his blood.
