Firm moves to tackle plastic pollution in Lagos

In an effort to reduce plastic pollution in Lagos State metropolis, the Nigerian Bottling Company (NBC) has pledged to recover plastic packaging wastes and ensure they are recycled to generate wealth.

The NBC made the pledge during the commissioning of recycling banks in five communities in the state within the Low Cost Housing Estates in Ijaiye/Ojokoro, Iba, Isolo and Pen Cinema in partnership with Chanja Datti Recycling Plant.

Corporate Affairs and Sustainability Director of NBC, Oluwasoromidayo George, said that appropriate plastic waste management would serve as an immense potential of creating a vibrant green circular economy that would help to alleviate poverty.

George, therefore, encouraged all to co-operate in transforming Nigeria, the continent and the world, adding that the NBC envisions that with this community-led approach, it will support and catalyse the development of waste management infrastructure within the nation.

Also, the Packaging Recovery Personnel, NBC, Dr Idris Adetola, said that the recycling bank would encourage the right recycling behaviour and bring the infrastructure close so that the citizens could connect with.

He said that each of the projects in each location cost about N15 million, and the total value of the entire project is about N120 million.

Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, Gaji Omobolaji Tajudeen, urged everyone to support and champion the establishment of community recycling banks in the neighbourhoods, noting that it creates opportunities for education and engagement.
