First Lady mourns NCWS president, Lau

Hajiya Lami Adamu Lau

Wife of the President, Oluremi Tinubu, has expressed shock at the passing of President of the National Council of Women Societies (NCWS), Hajiya Lami Adamu Lau.

The First Lady, in a statement yesterday, described Lau’s passage as a great loss to the struggle for the emancipation of the womenfolk in Nigeria.

Tinubu, while praying for the repose of the soul of the deceased, commiserated with her immediate family, friends, women’s community and the NCWS at large.

In an earlier announcement, the NCWS, in a statement by Council Head of Admin, Naomi Agbo, explained that Lau died in the early hours of yesterday during a brief illness.

It stated that her tireless efforts and contributions to the betterment of the society will never be forgotten.

The council called on its members and the public to join them in consoling Lau’s family, friends and NCWS members.

“Hajiya Lami Adamu-Lau was a dedicated leader and champion of women’s empowerment, who will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

“Her tireless efforts and contributions to the betterment of our society will never be forgotten,” she said.

According to her, Mrs Adamu-Lau will be buried according to Islamic rites in her hometown of Lau in Taraba State.

Lau emerged unopposed as NCWS national president in May 2022 at the council’s general elections during its national convention in Abuja.

In her acceptance speech, she had attributed her success to God and hard work over the years.

She relished the council’s presidency, stating that her administration would strictly focus on ensuring that Nigerian women gain their “rightful” place in government, and would formulate policies for proper development of the girl-child.
