The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila has charged Nigerians to engage in regular medical check up to prevent diabetes, hypertension, cancer, and glaucoma among other life-threatening ailments.
The Speaker made the call yesterday, at a free medical and surgical outreach organised by the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), in collaboration with a member of the State House of Assembly, Desmond Olusola Elliot for residents of Surulere, held at Love Garden Surulere, Lagos.
Gbajabiamila, who said everyone has one health challenge or the other, emphasised the need for regular check up to identify the ailment early and treat it immediately without delay.
The Speaker, Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, who said health is wealth, advised that it is the responsibility of everyone in government to emulate such free medical outreach and replicate it in their communities as a way of taking care of the electorate.
The President of the ARD, Dr. Okerinde Samuel said his team had performed cataract surgery for more than 50 persons in the community, including those with fibroid and other threatening ailments.
Samuel said the gesture was as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), to give back to the society where they operate, because Surulere is part of communities where they operate.
He said: “We need support from individuals, private organisations, religious organisations, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and others, so that we can do more.”
Elliot said the free medical screening started since December 2021 and will continue until the residents are free from all sicknesses.
