Godwin Akpo eyes World Cup with Benin after stellar season

Godwin Akpo

It was a season to remember for Benin Republic striker Godwin Efeneja Akpo after helping Attack Energy SC to a flawless campaign, winning all their games without conceding a goal. Playing seven games for the club out of a total of 11, Akpo scored seven goals and provided three assists, leading his team to the title.

As the first African player to play in the Afghanistan Champions League, Akpo’s outstanding performance has put him on the radar of other clubs looking for African talent ahead of the new campaign. “I just got a call from a sports journalist who told me he got my contact from a friend in Iran who told him how good I was,” Akpo explained. “After much discussion with the presidents of both clubs, I decided to join Attack Energy FC because of their ambition to play in the AFC Cup.”

Coming to Afghanistan was never part of Akpo’s plan, but the club’s ambition and the familiar language made the transition easier. “I played in Iran before, Sudan, Nigeria, and Benin Republic. My first professional contract was in Sudan, even though I spent just six months there before returning to Nigeria and then signing with Jeunesse De Sportive D’agonlin (JSA) in 2017,” he said.

Reflecting on his achievements, Akpo stated, “My achievement so far is good in terms of my statistics. I helped my team win the league without any defeat or conceding a goal. I think that will be a record no team can beat again. It will be a record for a lifetime, and I am happy I was part of that wonderful team.”

Akpo’s time in the Nigeria Premier Football League, where he played for Wikki Tourists and Gombe United, also holds fond memories. He was instrumental in helping Gombe United maintain their elite division status, giving his all for the team.

Looking ahead, Akpo has set his sights on representing the Gernot Rohr-led Squirrel of Benin as they continue their quest for a slot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Recently nationalised as a Benin Republic citizen, Akpo dreams of playing at the highest level, ideally in the European Champions League.

“I know I am going to play at the highest level, hopefully go to Europe or play in a big team in Asia someday. By God’s grace, I hope to help my country play in the World Cup because they have never qualified or played in the World Cup,” Akpo added.

“My dream team would be to play for Real Madrid or Arsenal. I say Real Madrid because it’s the team I love and support, and Arsenal because my dad was a die-hard fan. I know he always talked about how he would love to see me play at the club someday. Even though he is late, I would be happy to make his dreams come true.”

Godwin Akpo’s journey is a testament to his determination and talent, and his future in football looks promising as he aims for greater heights.
