In its bid to reduce the scourge of cancer among Muslim women, Lekki Muslim Ummah (LEMU) Women Forum has raised the capacity of its female members in early detection and treatment of breast cancer.
Speaking during the cancer awareness workshop, the Amirah of the forum, Alhaja.Kudirat Saliu assured that breast cancer is treatable with early detection.
“Early detection comes with early intervention, and early intervention saves lives. Regular mammograms and screenings are important in detecting any potential signs of breast cancer at its earliest stages. And always reach out to a doctor when something seems wrong. Remember, knowledge is power and taking charge of our health is an act of self-love,” she said.
She advised women to prioritize their health and well-being.
“As we gather here with a collective purpose, united by causes that touch the lives of countless women around the world. “I extend my deepest appreciation to the dedicated doctors, nurses and volunteers who have worked tirelessly to ensure the smooth running of this event. I also want to give our special thanks to the LEMU Women Forum, SOB Foundation, our generous donors and Nordica Fertility Centre for their talk on fibroid care and infertility. May Allah abundantly reward you for your kindness and service to others.”
Also, the founder of FOB Breast Cancer Awareness, Mrs Fatimoh Olusola Buraimoh, said the workshop was to create more awareness about the disease, saying as a cancer survival early detection is key.
“I took it upon myself to educate the public, also encouraging people to get screened. I am a cancer survivor of breast cancer and I took it upon myself to found a foundation to educate, sensitive women on breast cancer through outreach programmes.”
She stressed that due to cultural beliefs, myths or taboos, some believe cancer is diabolical and this has led so many people not to seek adequate treatments.
“If you are diagnosed with cancer, don’t keep it to yourself, don’t believe that miracle will cure you. Seek medical treatment immediately to get cured,” she said. Buraimoh said breast cancer is real and women should endeavour to learn how to do breast examinations for early detection.
“Although they said when you are over 40 that is when you are at breast cancer risk, it doesn’t work that way, I was just 30 when I discovered mine and it was through self-examination.”
A beneficiary of the workshop, Hajia Sadiat Sulaimon commended the organisers saying, so many women have died due to lack of accurate information, affordable screening, and treatment options for breast cancer.
