Group partners LAWMA on Lagos coastline clean-up

A coalition of 300 firms under the aegis of the Food and Beverage Recycling Alliance (FBRA) has commenced a clean-up of the Lagos coastlines.

The exercise, which is in partnership with the Lagos State Waste Management Agency (LAWMA), and in collaboration with Kids Beach Garden, Elegushi in Lekki, Lagos comes as part of initiatives to mark the 2024 World Ocean Day.

Speaking at the event, FBRA board member and Managing Director of Chivita Limited, Mr Eelco Weber, reiterated the commitment of the alliance to environmental sustainability, protection and preservation of the environment from post-consumer packaging material.

He stressed the urgent need to support the mitigation of climate change through restoration and management of coastal, as well as marine ecosystems, adding that FBRA is leading the call for action.

FBRA Executive Director, Agharese Onaghise, also spoke on the need for action, and how the clean-up exercise and sensitisation is a significant round-up event for the week-long World Environment Day activities organised by the alliance.

Onaghise emphasised the need for stakeholders to be responsible for catalysing actions for the oceans and climate, and ensure that the environment is preserved to sustain both the present and future generations through collaborations.

Representatives from 35 food and beverage member companies and their families partook in the clean-up and recovered 1,005kg of microplastics with the support of LAWMA officials. FBRA, which is a packaging producer responsibility organisation affirmed its determination to implement the Extended Producer Responsibility in the country.
