There was tension in Abavo community in Ika South Local Council of Delta State, following the reported killing of a pioneer chairman of the People’s Democratic Party in ward 10, Elder Francis Amamosa by suspected herders at his farm along the corridors of the railway line in Okpe quarters, Abavo.

The Guardian learnt that the octogenarian farmer was allegedly attacked and killed on Monday, shortly after arriving at his farm when the suspects attempted to kidnap him and two other farmers.

It was gathered that a middle-aged man, whose name is not known, was also killed in similar circumstances in Abavo Community, three days earlier.

According to the community sources, Elder Amamosa resisted them, and wanted to know why he should be asked to leave his farm, and this infuriated the hoodlums who reportedly opened fire on him but the bullets did not penetrate him.

Consequently, it was gathered that the herders used a machete and cut him all over the body, resulting in his death.

The source added that two other farmers who were with the late politician, were however kidnapped and taken to an unknown destination.

The remains of late Elder Amamosa has been deposited at the mortuary while the matter was reported at the Abavo Police Division for investigations.

The Guardian learnt that since the incident, people are scared to go to farms for fear of being killed, while those in Edem Uno Community Ndokwa East Local Council had their farm crops destroyed by herders.

Lamenting the situation, Member Representing Delta North in State Livestock Management Committee, Mr Ujene Matthew Ossai, said plantain suckers numbering about 1,800 were totally eating up, adding that this disastrous activities started two years ago.

According to him, he recently visited the herders’ camp and advised them to thread cautiously to avoid encroaching into farms.

When contacted, spokesperson for Delta State Police Command, SP Bright Edafe confirmed the incident but said no arrest has been made in connection with the killing.
