No fewer than 40 journalists have been trained by the International Press Centre (IPC) to combat information disorder in democratic governance reporting using fact-checking and Freedom of Information (FoI) tools.

The selected journalists, who were taken through various ways to fact-check information at a two-day capacity-building in Akure, Ondo State, were trained on how to confront the challenge of misinformation, disinformation and propaganda.

According to the Programme Officer of IPC, Melody Akinjiyan, the theme of the workshop, “Credible Elections and Democratic Governance,” underscored the fundamental principles upon which societies are built.

Former Managing Director and Editor-in-Chief of The Guardian, Martins Oloja, who stressed that the emergence of information disorder poses a threat to the foundation of democratic governance, advised journalists to always follow up on stories in the interest of the people.

Oloja advised journalists to always endeavour to delve into the world of data journalism. On his part, Executive Director of IPC, Lanre Arogundade, harped on the need for journalists to equip themselves with fact-checking tools.
