Jazz Music: A catalyst for peace, job opportunities, cultural revitalization

Jazz music has been described as an important genre that significantly impacts peace promotion, job creation, and the cultural and social fabric of society.

Jazz artist and songwriter Tosin Salako made this assertion while speaking with journalists on the sidelines of a Jazz Concert in Abuja,to commemorate International Jazz Day.

Describing jazz music as a crucial force in combating injustice and insecurity in society, Salako emphasized its role in promoting peace and dialogue through culture.

According to him, jazz is a form of music that encourages introspection. “Music prompts people to think. It promotes peace and any message you wish to convey.”

“If someone constantly hears gunshots in their mind, it becomes prevalent in society. But when music advocates for peace and love, it counters these negative influences.”

Speaking about this year’s celebration, he emphasized the message of International Jazz Day: promoting world peace, dialogue, and culture.

Regarding the global recognition of Nigerian music, Salako noted its improvement and the success of Nigerian artists worldwide.

At the event, jazz singer Michael Ofuyeta, popularly known as Mike Wonder, stressed the need to organize jazz concerts across Nigeria, including Abuja, Lagos, Kano, and other cities.

He said: “To popularize jazz like Afrobeat, we must raise awareness and celebrate it continuously. Holding events like this monthly can attract jazz lovers in Nigeria.”

Basorun Aderoju, a jazz music enthusiast, highlighted the need for an educated and appreciative mindset to understand the beauty of jazz music.

He emphasized that mainstream acceptance of jazz could promote peace and curb insecurity and negative behaviors. “Jazz lacks the publicity enjoyed by other music genres. Increasing awareness could lead to its widespread acceptance and dominance in the industry.”
