Kano decries courts’ protection for drug dealers

Govrnor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has expressed worry at the boldness of drug dealers, who have not only sought court orders for the release of their shipments but have been successful in securing their seized contraband cargoes.

A statement issued by his spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, noted that the governor made this known during his visit to the Kano Road Traffic Agency (KAROTA), where he was briefed on the situation.

Yusuf’s amazement was evident, as he discovered that individuals engaged in the illicit drug trade, had successfully procured court orders for the release of their seized contraband. He expressed surprise at the action of the judges, who granted such release orders, emphasising the severity of the issue at hand.

Responding to the disturbing development, Yusuf ordered the state Attorney General to formulate a comprehensive strategy to prevent drug traffickers from exploiting legal loopholes in the future.

He stressed the need for collaboration between the judiciary and the government to shield the state from dangers posed by drug trafficking.

While recognising KAROTA’s diligence in confiscating illicit drugs, the governor urged the agency to take necessary actions to eliminate hard substances in the state.

Reiterating his administration’s unwavering dedication to combating drug smuggling within the state, Yusuf affirmed the government’s assistance to agencies with a view to effectively combating drug trafficking and abuse.
