Lagos Commissioner, Rotarian challenge youths on leadership

The District Governor, Rotary International, District 9110 comprising Lagos and Ogun States, Rotarian Remi Bello and the Lagos State Commissioner for Education, Folasade Adefisayo have both challenged youths to unlock their potential and grab opportunities offered by the digital age.

They both charged youths during the opening ceremony of Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) 2021, Rotary International District 9110 with the theme: “Youth Striving To Change Lives” where about 900 youths from Lagos and Ogun States are camped for intensive leadership and vocational training at the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Orientation Camp, Iyana Ipaja.

Bello, who charged the youth to ensure they select their role models among the various speakers on ground, said RYLA that began 36 years ago had impacted over 15,000 participants.


“RYLA is a Rotary International Leadership and Citizenship Development programme that is coordinated and organised by Rotary Clubs and Districts around the world for young men and women within the ages of 14-30 drawn from various communities to become distinguished leaders in the society.

“Since 1985, Rotary International District 9110 has organised this life-changing programme yearly for young people in Secondary schools, higher institutions as well as community youths and young professionals through 9-days all residential camps with workshop, seminar, vocational and physical training,” he said.

The Commissioner disclosed that the Lagos State government would come up with a comprehensive education system that would offer options of technical and general education for senior secondary students with a focus on agriculture, ICT, construction, fashion and designing, drama among others.

Former Commissioner for Education, Lagos State, Saidat Oladunjoye, who was also the guest speaker, asked the youth to be ambitious and take advantage of the training offered to them.

Chair, RYLA 2021, Dare Adeyeri in his welcome address, told the youths to prepare themselves through the training with a view to stepping into leadership positions.
