Lagos coroner to release findings on Oromoni’s death April 12

Sylvester Oromoni (Jnr)

The Lagos State Coroner Court has fixed April 12, 2024, to release findings of an inquest on the death of 12-year-old Sylvester Oromoni, a student of Dowen College, in the Lekki area of the state. Magistrate Mikhail Kadir disclosed this after the adoption of final written addresses by parties in the case.

The inquest began in January 2022, following Oromoni’s death on November 30, 2021, at a private hospital in Warri, Delta State, due to alleged health complications at the college.

The family had alleged that Oromoni died from injuries he suffered as a result of bullying by five senior students of the college. It also alleged that he was not treated by the school in a hospital.

Dowen College, however, refuted the claims that the deceased was bullied by students at the college. A human rights activist, Femi Falana (SAN), represented the Oromoni family, while Dowen College was represented by Anthony Kpokpo.

During the inquest, the deceased’s mother, Rosemary Oromoni, testified as the last witness on October 23, last year. The deceased’s father, school nurse, teacher and some school students had earlier testified before the coroner.
