A Chief Magistrate’s Court sitting in Surulere, Lagos, yesterday, sentenced a 53-year-old man, Tunde George, to two years in prison for defrauding two accommodation seekers of N1.2 million.

The magistrate, Sanusi Adagun, sentenced George after he pleaded guilty to a two-count charge of obtaining money by false pretence and stealing.

Adagun, who gave an option of fine, ordered the convict to pay back N625,000 and N635,000 to the complainants within 14 days or risk going to prison.

George, who was initially arraigned on February 19, lives at No 17, Iyabo St., Sari Iganmu, Lagos, pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy.

The prosecutor, Inspector Courage Ekhueorohan, had earlier told the court that George committed the offences on July 21, 2023 at Sari Iganmu Road, Orile Lagos.

According to him, George fraudulently obtained N1.2 million from Ugwute Stephen and Abigail Onyiloye, under the pretext of renting out a self-contained apartment to them.

Ekhueorhan said the offences contravened Sections 287 and 314 (3) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

SIMILARLY, a Dei-dei Grade I Area Court in Abuja sentenced a 28-year-old security guard, Sunday Joshua, to six months imprisonment for stealing 15 bags of cement and a Geepee tank.

Joshua was convicted and sentenced after pleading guilty to criminal breach of trust and theft.

The judge, Saminu Suleiman, gave Joshua an option to pay a fine of N100,000 and ordered him to pay the complainant, Eyanohoure Kesiena, N719,650 compensation.

Suleiman warned Joshua to be of good behaviour and desist from committing crimes.

Earlier, the prosecuting counsel, Chinedu Ogada, told the court that the complainant reported the matter at Dutse Police Station on February 16.

Ogada said the complainant employed Joshua as a security guard on his site, located at Kubwa, Abuja, sometime in 2019.

He said Joshua also stole blocks and N95,000 cash, meant for plastering work.

The offence, he said, contravened the provisions of Sections 312 and 289 of the Penal Code.
