Five months after a House Officer, Dr Vwaere Diaso, died as a result of a faulty elevator at the General Hospital, Odan, Lagos, the facility remains unattended.

Also, the Ministry of Health is yet to come up with the result of its investigation after arrests were made in connection with the incident.

The tragic elevator accident happened in August 2023. Diaso was trapped when she went down to the 10-floor to pick her launch.

The elevator, said to have been faulty at the time, had not been looked into despite complaints by health workers to the authorities.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who was piqued by the loss of the doctor, had sacked and blacklisted managers in charge of the facility. He also suspended the General Manager of Lagos State Infrastructure and Asset Management Agency, Adenike Adekanbi.

A few days after the doctor was buried, Sanwo-Olu announced his visit to the hospital on an Instagram post, disclosing he had already given orders for repair and/or replacement.

However, when The Guardian visited the hospital yesterday, the affected area was still sealed off while doctors were seen taking the stairs to their apartments.

Responding to enquiry on repair of the elevator, Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, said: “Only the contractor has an answer as to when the work will commence. I am not the contractor.”

Asked about persons arrested in connection with the incident, he said: “The ministry of health will talk about it soon.”

The Director, Public Affairs, Lagos State Ministry of Health, Tubosun Ogunbanwo, could not give a dateline for the repair or replacement.

He said: “The government is working on it. Government has to take proper steps in getting it fixed, and the right people have to be contacted to get it fixed. They can’t just buy it and put it there.

“There are a lot of things involved in the issue and it has caused the death of somebody. So, the government is looking into it very well and things will be put in place within the shortest time. They are working on it.”
