The House of Representatives has expressed serious concern regarding recent allegations of discrimination against Nigerians at a supermarket in Abuja operated by Chinese nationals, indicating that it will investigate the matter and ensure appropriate action is taken.
The allegations have raised questions about the treatment of Nigerians in Chinese-operated establishments, leading to the involvement of the House Committee on China/Nigeria Parliamentary Friendship Group.
In a statement signed by Rep. Jaafaru Yakubu, chairman of the committee, and Rep. Akin Rotimi, Jr., House spokesman and chairman of the House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, the lawmakers emphasized that any form of discrimination contradicts the principles of friendship and cooperation that both Nigeria and China have worked hard to establish over the years. They noted that the committee’s goal is to foster positive and mutually beneficial relations between the two nations.
The statement highlighted the longstanding relationship between Nigeria and China, characterized by mutual respect, cooperation, and friendship, resulting in significant benefits for both countries through various bilateral partnerships, economic collaborations, and cultural exchanges. The committee emphasized that these allegations, if confirmed, could undermine the positive relationships between the two nations.
The House of Representatives announced that it will conduct a thorough investigation into the matter, working with other relevant committees to gather all necessary information and ensure redress where necessary. Additionally, the House urged all parties involved to approach the issues with sensitivity and open-mindedness, striving for peaceful and constructive solutions.
