Nasarawa issues order to check illegal mining

As part of efforts to checkmate influx of illegal miners and other economic criminals, Nasarawa State government has issued Executive Order 2 to ensure strict compliance by interested and authorised miners.

The Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Yakubu Kwanta, made this known at a press briefing in Lafia, yesterday.

Kwanta said: “Following the signing of Executive Order No. 02, 2022 by Nasarawa to protect mining host communities, authorised miners are to submit two copies of all previously signed community agreements on or before January 30, 2023 to the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources for vetting.

“All authorised mining entities of the Federal Government in the state must report to the
Ministry of Environment to verify their legal status, citizenship and background before settlement in the communities, in collaboration with security agencies.”

The order spelt out payment by all miners of taxes, levies, fees and other charges promptly to the Central Billing System domiciled with the state’s Internal Revenue Service.

It also restricts mining host communities from bequeathing rights of Occupancy of lands to entities intending to carry out mining activities.

The commission noted that enforcement of the order has commenced.
