The Nigerian Council of Registered Insurance Brokers (NCRIB) has called on the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy to make clear to the government the roles of insurance in stimulating and sustaining the economic development of the country.

NCRIB president, Prince Babatunde Oguntade, made this call while leading a delegation of the council to the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Gboyega Oyetola in Abuja, as part of strategic collaboration initiatives of the current leadership.

He observed that the knowledge of government about the roles of insurance is still very low and takes the commitment of members and professionals in top executive positions in government to correct. He assured that the council would continually seek ways to add value to the Marine and Blue Economy Ministry, through required advisory services in insurance and risk management when engaged.

Oguntade thanked the Minister for his past support, imploring him to use his strategic position to further toot the horns of insurance brokers with the government.

The Minister, in his response, affirmed that he remained a proud member of the NCRIB and by extension, the insurance family, being one of the pioneer graduates of insurance from the University of Lagos. He assured the council of greater support and promotion of roles of brokers amongst his contemporaries in government.

During the administration of the immediate past president, the board of the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM), had to meet with the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha, with a request to the government to ensure that ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs), patronise the insurance industry through proper insurances for all government assets around the country.

This received poor support and is an indication to the fact that the industry is no longer at ease with the poor treatment meted out to it by the government in the form of low level of recognition, support and patronage.
