NNPCL targets 14,000bpd from Akpo West field as oil production commences

TotalEnergies

Total Energies and its partners have announced the start of production from the Akpo West field on the PML2 license in Nigeria.

The Akpo West development leverages the existing Akpo facilities to keep costs low and minimise greenhouse gas emissions. The project’s carbon intensity is expected to be below 5 kg COâ‚‚e/boe and will contribute to reducing the average carbon intensity of TotalEnergies’ portfolio.

According to a statement by the company, Akpo West is tied back to the existing Akpo Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) facility, which started up in 2009 and produced 124,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day in 2023.

The company projected that by mid-2024, Akpo West will add 14,000 barrels of condensate production per day, to be followed by up to four million cubic meters of gas per day by 2028.

Senior Vice President for Africa, Exploration and Production at TotalEnergies, Mike Sangster, mentioned that the project leverages TotalEnergies’ footprint in Nigeria and will quickly bring value to the country.

Meanwhile, a statement issued by the Chief Corporate Officer, NNPCL, Olufemi Soneye, noted that the development is in line with President Bola Tinubu’s directive to the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) to optimise production from the nation’s oil and gas assets, announcing the successful commencement of oil production from the Akpo West Field.

Soneye said that the milestone is the result of planning, collaboration and dedication from all stakeholders involved in the project.

He said: “The milestone was enabled by the strategic leadership of the Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO), Mele Kyari, and the Upstream Directorate of the NNPC Ltd whose support played no small role in propelling the operators to actualise the short and mid-term hydrocarbon production goal of the Tinubu administration.
