Northern youth group urges Senate to focus on national issues, not Assembly renovation

The Northern Ethnic Youths Group Assembly (NEYGA) has called on Senator Ali Ndume, the Chief Whip of the Senate, to focus his legislative expertise on addressing critical national issues rather than on relatively trivial matters such as the renovation of the National Assembly chambers. NEYGA emphasized that the renovation of the National Assembly is an internal affair that should not distract from the pressing challenges facing Nigerians.

According to the group’s spokesperson, Ibrahim Dan-Musa, the Senate should engage in constructive dialogue and debate to alleviate the economic hardships and multiple taxes that Nigerians face, rather than wasting valuable time discussing minor issues like malfunctioning microphones and seat allocation. Dan-Musa noted that these internal matters could be resolved without involving the entire nation.

“The Senate is prioritizing its internal affairs and comfort over its primary responsibilities, leaving its core duties to Nigerians unattended,” Dan-Musa said. He urged the Senate leadership to emulate the decorum and maturity displayed by their counterparts in the House of Representatives, reminding them that the Senate chamber is a revered institution for serious lawmaking, executive regulation, and government oversight.

The Northern Ethnic Youths Group Assembly warned against any plots to destabilize the 10th National Assembly, particularly the Senate, and urged lawmakers to prioritize national interests over political affiliations. The group cautioned against allowing the National Assembly to become a playground for trivial pursuits and encouraged respectful and dignified conduct among senators.

The group also called on Sen. Ndume to use his position as Chief Whip to ensure that the Senate focuses on important national issues, instead of spending time on internal matters like the renovation of the National Assembly chambers. They emphasized the need for the Senate to address the economic hardship faced by Nigerians and work towards solutions that benefit the entire nation.

“We encourage the Senate to prioritize the interests of the nation and work towards alleviating the suffering of the citizens. We emphasize the importance of decorum and maturity in conducting the business of lawmaking and regulating the executive. Any plots to destabilize the National Assembly must be avoided to maintain a stable and effective legislative body,” the group stated.
