Ogun govt to conduct multi-dimensional poverty, development survey

Ogun State governor Dapo Abiodun

Ogun State Government has said that it is planning to conduct household surveys to develop a framework that will assist in the planning, management, and evaluation of the multi-dimensional poverty human development index.

The survey, which is expected to go one step further than the NBS’ multi-dimensional poverty index, would allow the government of Dapo Abiodun to assess the impact of the various policies it had been implementing in the last four and half years in such areas as education, health, job creation, empowerment and other social interventions.

Meanwhile, a consultant, E-services Nigeria Limited, had been contracted by the state government to carry out the survey within27 weeks. The general household survey will produce indicators needed for the design and monitoring of the implementation of various State Development Plans (SDPs).

The consultant, who commenced work on March 6, 2024, is expected to work in liaison with the Ogun State Bureau of Statistics. According to the state’s Commissioner for Budget and Planning, Olaolu Olabimtan, the survey would enable the state government to properly establish baselines on different data points in the state and allow for the implementation of the various strategies already earmarked for execution.

The commissioner, who spoke on the Gateway Agro-Cargo International Airport, which, along with its allied businesses in the aerotropolis is expected to generate over 25,000 direct and indirect jobs, said that the government’s investments in automating business processes, would improve efficiency and the Ease of Doing Business index in the state.

Olabimtan also said that education and human capital development remain key priorities of the government with the renovation and construction of over 1,200 classrooms and buildings across all 234 wards in the state, together with over 50,000 new desks and chairs, provision of learning materials, and the implementation of the OgunDigiClass initiative, which utilises technology for virtual learning.

In the area of provision of shelter, Olabimtan said the construction of 4,000 housing units, among others, were some interventions that the government believed should filter down to improve the living standards of the people of the state.
