Rivers Angels beat Edo Queens as Bayelsa pip Nasarawa Amazons

Action from (NWFL) Super Six

The 2024 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Super Six contest entered its Match Day two, yesterday, in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, with former champions, Rivers Angels beating Edo Queens 2-1.

Edo Queens, who handed a 5-1 defeat to Conference Queens on Match Day one, were looking forward to picking another three points from Rivers Angels, who drew their first match against hosts, Bayelsa Queens, but they met a brick wall in the Fubara girls.

It was a fierce battle between the two sides, who shared victory at their various grounds in the regular season. Rivers Angels beat Edo Queens 2-1 at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, but lost to the Benin girls 4-1 in the reverse fixture.

At yesterday’s NWFL Super Six contest in Yenagoa, all the three goals were scored in the first half.

With the victory, Rivers Angels now sit top of the table with four points, same as Bayelsa Queens, but with a superior goal difference.
In another match played yesterday, hosts, Bayelsa Queens, defeated Nasarawa Amazons 1-0.

After a goalless first half, both sides restarted hostilities in the second half, searching for an edge. And just when the fans thought the game would end in a draw, Bayelsa Queens struck. The result means that Bayelsa Queens are back in contention for the Super Six title now with four points.

Meanwhile, Chairman, Edo Sports Commission, Yusuf Alli, has urged players and officials of Edo Queens not to allow the defeat to Rivers Angels affect their morale in the remaining matches. “You are in a competition venue, and I expect you to put this defeat behind and prepare for the next challenge. Anything can still happen and you might lift the trophy,” he said.
