The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Rivers State chapter, has chided the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, for advising the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, to look for somebody from the Ogoni extraction to take over from Governor Siminialayi Fubara in 2027.
The party cautioned the Senate President to watch his words, warning that such utterances could heat up the already tense political atmosphere in the state.
Publicity Secretary of the state PDP, Tambari Sydney Gbara, stated this, yesterday, in reaction to a statement credited to Akpabio at an event in Ogoni, Rivers State, at the weekend, where he allegedly told Wike to replace Fubara with an Ogoni man.
Recall that Wike and Fubara, his estranged godson, have been in a protracted rift, following alleged undue interference by the FCT minister in running the state government.
The state PDP spokesman said that Akpabio, one of the notable leaders in the South-South, was expected to make utterances that would calm the already tense political situation and not exacerbate it.
He regretted that at a time when people were passing through excruciating pain, suffering, hardship and hunger due to the bad state of the nation’s economy, the Senate President did not show any concern regarding what the poor masses were going through, but rather chose to make comments that angered the majority of Rivers people, who are resolute in their support for the current administration led by Fubara.
Gbara argued that in as much as he believes in the Ogoni governorship project, it is not the right time to make such utterances, considering the tense political atmosphere in the state and the fact that the next election is still very far away.
He stated that Fubara enjoys immense support from the Ogonis, who are good neighbours to the people of Opobo and also in the same Senatorial District.
