Rivers to review pension law, exempt retirees from contributory scheme

Rivers State government has disclosed plans to amend its pension law to cover retiring between June 2022 and 2025.

The state Director General of the pension board, Ijeoma Samuel, who made the disclosure, yesterday, advised civil servants against rushing for compulsory retirement.

She added that retirees from June this year to 2025 would be exempted from the contributory pension scheme.

Samuel, in a goodwill message at the Rivers State Civil Service 2022 New Year Thanksgiving/dedication service held, yesterday, at the Ministry of Justice hall in Port Harcourt, encouraged civil servants to expect better days ahead.

Earlier in his address, the state Head of Civil Service, Rufus Godwin, called on civil servants to be committed to their duties and acquire skills to enable them fit into world standards.

He said: “Civil servants should be committed to their work and they should be productive, skilled to make them fit into the global world of capacity building where knowledge controls the rules of the economy.

“That is the only way to justify government investment of huge resources into the civil service.”
