SMEs demand subsidy over high electricity tariffs, others

Small and Medium Enterprises

Small and Medium-size Enterprises (SMEs) and other entrepreneurs across the country, yesterday, voiced their frustration over skyrocketing electricity tariff and associated costs, which affect their businesses.

The vendor community, which has been hit hard by the exorbitant fees, is pleading for relief.  Convener of the Vendors Party, Cristable Goodheart, disclosed this in Abuja, at an event with the theme, Promoting Entrepreneurship Appreciation / Creating Awareness for various Products/Service Vendors’.

She said: “Fuel prices are a big factor for business markets, and because of transportation, whether you are selling imported goods or local, you are badly hit. I know it is a challenge for them just trying to deal with the whole fuel issue, they could also work out a way to deal with the tariffs for electricity.”

Goodheart emphasised the importance of vendors in the local economy, highlighting their contribution to job creation and economic growth. She added: “The whole essence of us doing this is to promote entrepreneurship, trying to encourage people to be more resourceful.”

more creative, get off their backs and do things, and not necessarily waiting for white-collar job or paid employment. They can create employment for other people by being resourceful and creative.”
