Work on proven reproductive health solutions among the urban poor have started in eight local councils with the highest number of unmet family planning needs in Lagos State, says The Challenge Initiative (TCI).

TCI is led by the Bill and Melinda Gates Institute for Population and Reproductive Health in the Department of Population, Family and Reproductive Health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Baltimore, Maryland.

The State Programme Coordinator, Dr. Duduyemi Adeola, in a chat with MAP-Health Initiative (MAPHi) on family planning services in Lagos, yesterday, said the selection of the local councils was done in partnership with the state government, targeting the neediest areas, such as Ifako Ijaye, Eti-Osa, Surulere, Ajeromi-Ifelodun, Ikeja, Lagos Island, Alimosho and Mushin.

“It is a state-led project that will increase access to family planning services. We are supporting the state in 35 demonstration sites, 30 Primary Health Centres (PHCs) and five general hospitals,” she said.

Duduyemi said the project, which would run for three years from expression of interest approval. TCI started in Lagos in January last year with full implementation commencing later in April this year.

She added that TCI allowed stakeholders to do their work, but were guided and supported by them.
