Tinubu won’t take sides in Rivers crisis – Presidency spokesman

Ajuri Ngelale said President Bola Tinubu will not take sides in the crisis in Rivers state

A spokesman for President Bola Tinubu, Ajuri Ngelale, has said the Nigerian leader will not take sides in the crisis in Rivers State where Governor Sim Fubara is battling a faction of the state assembly.

“I believe that anyone who believes that by their actions whether it’s from the state or federal level and even to the legislature branch in the state or executive branch, if they are banking on Mr. President taking sides in this matter, they are mistaken and they would be disappointed,” Ngelale told TVC News.

“The President will never take sides, what he will do is to ensure that everybody has what they need to work.

“He is also going to ensure that any attempt to frustrate the Rivers state government from conducting its affairs which will benefit the people will obviously not be allowed.

“I think there is a need for all stakeholders to understand that the President will not take sides and they need to be focused on governance and delivering the dividends of democracy to the people of Rivers state and that should be their only consideration to the lead up to 2027 when we can start talking about politics.”

President Tinubu in December waded into the rift between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, Nyesom Wike and his successor  Fubara.

However, things have gone awry again in the state with the governor at loggerheads with the state’s House of Assembly lawmakers who are threatening to impeach him.

In a related development, the PDP also accused the APC of forcing itself into government in Rivers State.

PDP made this allegation against APC on Saturday in a statement by spokesman, Hon. Debo Ologunagba.

APC on Friday accused Fubara of violating Nigeria’s constitution. It said the governor’s denial of the existence of the state legislature is an impeachable offence.

The party said this in a statement by spokesman, Felix Morka after PDP confounded by the disturbing missteps of Fubara staged a press briefing on Wednesday to dismiss the APC Rivers state chapter’s call on the Rivers State House of Assembly to impeach the governor.

APC also accused the PDP of tendering a hogwash argument that by Section 109 of the Constitution, the 27 House of Assembly members who defected from PDP to APC have forfeited their seats, and echoed the governor’s declaration that the Rivers State House of Assembly is non-existent.

Reacting, PDP “lampooned APC over its witless press statement wherein it laboured without success to subvert the Constitution on the vacation of seats by former members of the Rivers State House of Assembly who lost their membership of that Legislative House upon defection from the PDP”.
