One of Uganda’s premier heavyweight boxers, Akhiru Golooba, known as Atta Soja, has outlined his ambitious goals for 2024. At just 23, Atta Soja remains largely unchallenged within his country, having demonstrated significant growth from his amateur years to his current professional status. His most recent bout in April saw him swiftly defeat Kakembo Elijah in under four minutes, leaving a packed Club Obligato in Kampala in awe.

Supported by Shadir Musa Bwogi’s SMG Promotions, Atta Soja has been instrumental in reviving Ugandan boxing and inspiring the younger generation. With an eye on the larger international stage, he aims to bring his talents to Europe and the United States, where he believes the most lucrative opportunities lie.

“I pray that this year, I can travel to big countries because of my profession and showcase what they are missing. So, I am targeting this year of 2024,” he said.

Atta Soja’s journey to professional boxing was fraught with challenges. His mother initially opposed his career choice, although his brothers, who were also boxers, secretly supported his training. Despite limited time and opportunities during his amateur days, Atta Soja’s father eventually convinced his mother to support his professional aspirations.

“I never enjoyed my amateurs because I was too grounded and I used to box in secret. Whenever my mum knew, she could just take me to boarding school. So, I had little time for boxing and I never went far with amateurs. My father supported me to go for professional boxing and then talked to my mum. She didn’t like the sport but at last, she agreed that I go for pro boxing,” he revealed.

Atta Soja’s personal life also reflects his dedication to boxing. He met his wife, Vivian Nuwahereza, while he was recovering from a shoulder injury, and initially, she was concerned about the physical demands of the sport. Over time, however, she embraced his passion and now plays a crucial role in his career as his chief nutritionist.

“I met my wife when I was already a boxer, but by that time I had paused boxing because of my shoulder dislocation. When we got closer, I told her about my journey. At first, she was worried, but slowly, I introduced her to the boxing world. Now, she’s into it and supports me fully. She prays for me every day, anoints me to be victorious, and is my best friend and assistant personal nutritionist,” he added.
