Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State has commenced the construction of the 113-kilometre Maiduguri metropolis ring road project.

According to him, the East, West and South ring road will link Auno, Molai, Polo and Shagari low-cost communities.

Flagging off the project, yesterday, in Maiduguri, the governor disclosed: “Today’s event was to begin Maiduguri urban renewal drive that was on the drawing board of the Ministry of Works and Housing.”

According to him, the project, which is part of his urban renewal drive, will address the challenge of traffic gridlocks in Maiduguri city.

He noted that decongesting the city could also address the housing deficits with the creation of job opportunities for economic growth.

Zulum said: “The state government is to execute the ring road in phases, commencing with the Maiduguri-Kano-Monguno-Gubio roads covering 16 kilometres.”

He, however, lamented the massive influx of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) into the Maiduguri metropolis.

“They have been putting a lot of pressure on housing and other existing infrastructure of Maiduguri,” he said, adding that the government is taking deliberate steps to decongest the city.
